My gf works at a payday loan/check cashing place and is it legal for them to make her pay for a mistake made?

they are saying she might have to pay for a mistake her and her co-worker made, a $575 mistake. And this is in Washington state. i was wondering if its legal for them to do that or does the company have to cover it? thanks

Start looking for a new job. You don't make enough money to offset hundreds of dollars in penalties for a mistake you made.

Do not admit to anything. Tell your employer not to deduct any of your pay or you will be forced to contact the Department of Labor. If you really want to get created you can also call the Washington State Department of Financial Institutions. They are regulated by this state department.

Keep in mind that corporations don't want to go to court for any reason b/c it costs them money and time. If they do with hold the money, sue them in small claims court. They would probably just give you your money instead of paying an attorney.

Reply:Legally, no they can not make her pay.

But they can legally fire her for cause.

Which would mean no unemployment benefits.

So she needs to decide, would she rather have her job and pay the money back.

Or no job, no unemployment, but not have to pay the money back.
Reply:It could be possible that it will come out of her paycheck. When she was hired there, I am sure that she signed something that said that she'd have to pay for a mistake made. She should ask to see those papers to make sure. Also, if it is not in writing, she can tell them that she does not have to. She should read the papers that she signed just to make sure. Good luck!
Reply:If you can be fored to pay or be fired for making a mistake, you must be living in a third-world country. If a boss is trying to make you pay, I would personally look for work elsewhere. This is so ridiculous that it is actually funny.

If anyone knew the cost of starting a new employee in any business, they would not be so worried about a measly $575 mistake. It is deductible and part of day to day business. Many more mistakes will occur. This is called human nature.

Contact an Government emloyment agency in your area if you have them.
Reply:No not really..if it's the cost of doing business...I think the boss may be trying to cover their azz.

If it's a real big problem the business needs to fire the worker.

If the mistake was intentional then they may be able to recoup the error..but still that's hard to prove..especially if their was a lack of training.
Reply:If they made the mistake then yes they can make them pay for it,

in the payday loan business if there are ANY questions about giving someone a loan the cashiers must clear the transaction though the manager on duty,

If they approved a loan without checking out ALL the credentials on the person getting the loan then they are responsible.

If they came up short on their drawer they are responsible.

They are lucky that they are only being asked to pay it back they could have gotten fired and the police called for that amount.
Reply:Im quiet sure that the company can not make them liable.... check with the closest fair trading company in your state. But normally the company will cover the costs...
